If you cant get to class every day, and you would like to create a ritual around your daily yoga practice, here are the scents you experience when you attend a Cathy Dearinger Yoga class. 
 
Nag Champa Incense, the only incense I burn when practising yoga. I always use the same fragrence so as soon as I light the incense I am instantly taken to a place of peace and relaxation. My body recognises the smell and enters a state ready to breath, still my mind and move through my asanas. 
 
Organic White Sage torch, I will light this torch at the beginning of sivasana, and create a smoke bath to remove any negative energy from the room and my body. 
 
Palo Santo burned directly after cleansing with White Sage. I let the stick burn for a few moments and then blow out the flame, the smoke bath from the Palo Santo encourages the return of positive energy to my body and the room. It is also believed to have many other benefits. 
 
Palo Santo or "Holy Wood" is a sacred tree that grows on the coast of South America. Traditionally this earthy scented wood was used by shamans, healers and elders in ritual prayer, purification ceremonies and for healing purposes. The ancients believed the tree had both magical and healing properties that would only be cultivated if the tree was allowed to live a full life and given a respectful death. They would only use wood from naturally fallen palo trees that had been lying peacefully for an extended period after which they were then dried, aged and eventually burned during rituals. The resulting sacred smoke bath was believed to have metaphysical properties that both purified negative energies and attracted positive ones. It is also well known for its healing properties:

Today, the harvesting of palo santo wood is strictly regulated with the same guiding principles. Our manufacturers ensure this holy wood is treated with respect and per required practice only uses naturally fallen trees that have been lying peacefully for between 4-10 years. In fact, every fallen tree that is taken, is replaced with a seedling working towards continuously restoring the palo santo population.
